Understanding HDFC Millennia Rewards
HDFC Millennia earns 5% CashPoints on eight specific partner platforms: Amazon, Flipkart, Myntra, BookMyShow, Swiggy, Uber, Zomato, and Hotstar. Everything else earns 1% CashPoints, including offline spends, utility bills, fuel and groceries at non-partner stores.
The crucial detail that most comparisons miss: CashPoints are not direct cashback. Each CashPoint is worth ₹0.30 when redeemed as a statement credit. So when HDFC says 5% CashPoints, the real rupee value is 5% × ₹0.30 = 1.5% actual cashback. On non-partner spends, 1% CashPoints = 0.30 paise per ₹100 spent — extremely low.
There is also a monthly cap: you can earn a maximum of 1,000 CashPoints per month from the 5% accelerated category. That means accelerated earning stops after ₹20,000 of partner platform spending in a month. If you spend more than that, the excess earns only 1% CashPoints (0.30 paise per ₹100).
CashPoints can be redeemed via HDFC SmartBuy, against your statement, or for products in the HDFC rewards catalogue. The statement credit rate is ₹0.30 per point. If you redeem for products, value varies — sometimes better, sometimes worse.
Understanding Axis Ace Rewards
Axis Ace gives direct cashback — no points, no conversion, no catalogue redemption. The cashback hits your statement automatically each month.
The headline rates: 4% cashback on Swiggy, Zomato, Ola and utility bill payments made through Google Pay. Everything else earns a flat 2% cashback with no cap and no category restrictions.
The Google Pay utility bill benefit is genuinely excellent. Pay your electricity bill, broadband, gas, water, mobile recharge or insurance premium through Google Pay with this card and earn 4% on all of it. A household spending ₹5,000 per month on utility bills earns ₹200 back every month — ₹2,400 per year — from bills alone.
The 2% flat on everything else also beats Millennia's effective 0.30% on non-partner categories by a wide margin.
Real-World Calculation: ₹20,000 Monthly Spend
Let us use a realistic urban spending pattern and see what each card actually puts back in your pocket:
| Category | Monthly Spend | Millennia (Effective ₹) | Axis Ace (Effective ₹) | Apply |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Amazon / Flipkart | ₹5,000 | ₹75 (5% × ₹0.30) | ₹100 (2%) | Apply → |
| Swiggy / Zomato | ₹3,000 | ₹45 (5% × ₹0.30) | ₹120 (4%) | Apply → |
| Utility bills (GPay) | ₹3,000 | ₹9 (1% × ₹0.30) | ₹120 (4%) | Apply → |
| Fuel | ₹2,000 | ₹6 (1% × ₹0.30) | ₹40 (2%) | Apply → |
| Groceries / Other | ₹7,000 | ₹21 (1% × ₹0.30) | ₹140 (2%) | Apply → |
| Monthly Total | ₹20,000 | ₹156 | ₹520 | Apply → |
| Annual Earnings | ₹1,872 | ₹6,240 | Apply → | |
| Annual Fee | ₹1,000 | ₹499 | Apply → | |
| Net Annual Benefit | ₹872 | ₹5,741 | Apply → |
Axis Ace wins by ₹4,869 per year on this spending pattern — and that is before accounting for the lower joining and annual fee.
When Does HDFC Millennia Make More Sense?
Despite losing the head-to-head on most spending patterns, Millennia has specific use cases where it genuinely wins:
- You are an HDFC SmartBuy power user. Shopping via HDFC SmartBuy portal can earn up to 10X CashPoints on select brands during promotions. If you route ₹20,000+ of shopping through SmartBuy, the effective rate improves significantly.
- Amazon is your dominant spend category. If 70%+ of your monthly spending is on Amazon, Millennia's 5% CashPoints (1.5% effective) on that large base plus HDFC relationship benefits may be preferable.
- You plan to upgrade to HDFC Regalia or Diners. HDFC rewards loyal customers. Holding Millennia builds your relationship with HDFC, making it easier to qualify for Regalia Gold, Regalia First or Diners Club later.
- You want the HDFC ecosystem benefits. EMI on HDFC app, SmartBuy deals, and HDFC partner offers may add value beyond the listed cashback rates.
When Does Axis Ace Make More Sense?
- You pay utility bills via Google Pay. 4% on electricity, broadband, mobile and gas bills is exceptional. No other low-fee card matches this.
- You want simple, direct cashback. Axis Ace puts money back in your account. No points maths, no SmartBuy portals, no redemption minimums.
- You spend across multiple platforms. The 2% flat on everything means you do not have to think about which card to use at which merchant.
- You spend heavily on Swiggy or Zomato. 4% on food delivery apps is significantly better than Millennia's effective 1.5%.
- Lower fee tolerance. ₹499 vs ₹1,000 — if you want to keep your card costs low, Ace wins on fee alone.
The Best Combination Strategy
Many savvy cardholders carry both. The logic: use HDFC Millennia exclusively for Amazon and Flipkart purchases (where its 5% CashPoints, even at 1.5% effective, earns on a large base you were going to spend anyway). Use Axis Ace for absolutely everything else — utility bills, Swiggy, Zomato, fuel, groceries, offline spending.
Combined annual fee: ₹1,499. Combined annual earnings on ₹20,000 monthly spend (optimising which card per merchant): estimated ₹7,200+. Net benefit: ₹5,700+ per year.
Our Final Verdict
For most urban Indians with typical spending across multiple categories, Axis Ace is the better everyday cashback card in 2026. The 4% on utility bills via Google Pay is a genuine category winner. The 2% flat on everything else removes all complexity. The lower ₹499 annual fee means you break even faster.
HDFC Millennia is the right pick only if you are deeply embedded in the HDFC ecosystem, shop almost exclusively on Amazon/Flipkart, or plan to use HDFC SmartBuy aggressively. If not, Axis Ace delivers more money back with less effort.
Bottom line: Axis Ace for most people. Millennia for HDFC loyalists and Amazon-first shoppers.
